Glacier National Park - August or early September is the best time to head to Glacier National Park since June and July are often rainy in this area. Campgrounds near the park's West Entrance where we stayed are plentiful and easily accessible for all types of RV's. There are many things to see and do in the park from walking around the shops and restaurants at Lake McDonald to driving the scenic Highway to the Sun to observing local wildlife on a nature hike on one of the park's many hiking trails.

To get to Glacier, take US 2 from Kalispell, Montana. Turn off at west Glacier to get to the park. At the park entrance there is a gas station, Visitor's Center and several snack and souvenir shops. Since our trip took place in the summer 2001, we do not know how the recent fires may have impacted this area. In the past, the western side of Glacier has been the most scenic and we have spent most of our time there. Please note that Going to the Sun Highway is not accessible by RV. The road is very narrow and there are many tunnels and hairpin turns that would not be negotiable by an RV. Use your tow vehicle or disconnect an attached coach at an exterior camp site. The western side of the highway is more of a wooded area while the eastern slopes are more grassy. The view is spectacular from all angles and there are many photo opportunities along the way. Logan Pass is at 6,646 feet above sea level and is at the continental divide. Winter is in the air year round. There are many pull out areas as well as a ranger station with exhibits on the areas. There are no restaurants along the way so if you are traveling over meal time, be sure to take a snack with you. After Logan's pass, we traveled past St. Mary's Lake and into the town of St. Mary's. St. Mary's has a food, gas and shops. From here, we took US 89 south to Kiowa to Montana 49 into east Glacier Park. From here, we took US route 2 west back to West Glacier and our campground area.
