| WILD BURROs ARE ART LOVERs TOO!!!!!!!!! |
Oatman is an old gold mining town too tough to die.In 1953, US 66 changed its alignment away from the town causing the town to almost fade away. Since the interest in Old US 66, Oatman Road is now signed with Historic US 66 signs. It wouldn't make sense to follow the latest US 66 alignment since Interstate 40 was built right over the later road. This is a rare treat to see how far country roads have come since this was a major cross country highway. Oatman is a "must see" on your list. It is where the old west still exists and burros (the descendants from the old mining days) still roam freely in the streets. This is where Clark Gable and Carol Lombard spent their honeymoon back in 1939. Portions of the movie"How the West was Won" were also filmed here. Park your vehicle and stroll through the colorful shops along main street. Gun fights are staged on weekends several times a day for the tourists. There also are many souvenir shops and several mom and pop fast food eateries all over town. Many places sell food (carrots) for the burros or plan ahead and bring your own! See the photo below to see Rusty, our Yorkshire Terrier getting checked out by a local burro. Because of Sitgreaves Pass to the east of Oatman and the hairpin curves beyond what was the town of Goldroad, we DO NOT RECOMMEND taking RVs on this road. Oatman has limited parking and virtually none for RVers. There are many RV parks in the Bullhead City area or you can stay at the Riverside RV Park in Laughlin. To get to Oatman, take AZ 95 south from Bullhead City, AZ to Boundry Cone Road. Take Boundry Cone Road which will merge into Oatman Rd. The trip from here is just a few miles. Enjoy! Be sure to check out our link to the left for Sitgreaves Pass.
