| The journey
for US 1 begins in Fort Kent, Maine a completely different
world from Monroe County Florida. We will start on this
page when Interstate 95 ends near Coral Gables Florida.
US 1 continues its journey south through Homestead and
even part of the Everglades to a series of bridges that
connect this road from the mainland to Key West which is
closer to Havana Cuba than to Miami. This right of way
was orginally the Flagger Railroad to Key West. The Labor
Day Hurricane a monster class killed many workers and others
during its contruction. I remember going to down this highway
when a semi- rig was coming at you and frantically trying
to push in the rear view mirror on the drivers side so
it would get torn off by the close encounter about to happen.
Today the state of Florida has rebuilt all of the bridges
to Key West with enough width to accomodate the biggest
RV and 18 wheeler. However if you look you can still see
some of the old structure still standing. Key Largo is
your first break from mainland Florida. Remember the famous
movie with Humprey Bograt with the same name. |
